Driveway Replacement – Paterson Split-Level

Project Overview

Complete driveway replacement for a split-level home in Paterson, NJ. The existing asphalt driveway had significant cracking, heaving, and drainage issues after years of freeze-thaw cycles. We removed the old surface, regraded the base, and installed a new 4-inch thick reinforced concrete driveway with proper slope for drainage.

Analysis

The original driveway had failed sub-base compaction causing widespread cracking and pooling water near the garage. Root intrusion from a nearby tree had also lifted sections. A full removal down to subgrade was the only viable long-term solution.

Process

Full demolition and haul-away of existing asphalt. Sub-base grading and compaction with 6 inches of compacted stone. Form setup with proper slope calculations. Pour of 4-inch 4000 PSI concrete with fiber mesh reinforcement. Broom finish with control joints every 10 feet.

Outcome

Homeowner received a smooth, properly draining concrete driveway that will last 30+ years with minimal maintenance. Drainage issues were fully resolved and curb appeal improved dramatically.
